Hello Fitness Locals!

This week we’ll be looking at BCAAs and what they can do to enhance your training and fitness efforts.

What are BCAAs?

You’re probably wondering what BCAA stand for? BCAA stands for Branched Chain Amino Acids. Amino acids are basically the building blocks of protein. You can expect all of the benefits of protein from BCAAs, plus a few extras.

What Do BCAAs Do?

BCAA supplements provide amino acids to the bloodstream and muscles in a very short time. This is one of the key benefits of BCAA over protein before and during workouts. The amino acids then protect against muscle loss and can help with energy during your workouts.

Amino acids taken on an empty stomach can have some other strange effects, I wrote recently about my experience with L-Carnitine on my other site, some amino acids can be uplifting, others can help you sleep. As for the main amino acids in our BCAA supplement some effects that have been documented include appetite suppression, improvements in insomnia and anxiety, regulation of blood sugar and energy levels and improvements in muscle growth and maintenance.

When Should I Take BCAAs?

BCAAs can be taken pretty much any time you want, and you will still get a lot of the benefits, however to get the full effect, you’re best to take them on an empty stomach. They are perfect for taking before and during your workout.

Are BCAAs Safe?

BCAAs are generally safe in amounts well above what people supplement with. Due to their effects on blood sugar, you should seek medical advice before taking them if you have a medical condition.

If you’re pregnant, you should avoid BCAAs, it’s not that they’ve been shown to be dangerous, they haven’t, it’s just that they haven’t been proven safe yet.

How much BCAA should I take?

Dosage varies, so follow the directions on the bottle. As for our BCAAs, take 1-3 BCAA capsules before, and another 1-3 capsules during, your training. You can take more for an added edge if you wish!
